1. Attorneys There is little doubt that lawyers probably have saved the most lives. They negotiated plea bargains in exchange for a life sentence, convinced juries to opt for lesser sentences and have been so successful in litigating appeals that a huge percentage of death sentences were eventually overturned.
2. Journalists Journalism students, and documentary film makers. A number of people were freed from death row because they brought attention to certain cases.
3. Murder victims family members I know of several cases where the death sentence was not sought because the family of the victim opposed execution. In addition, the presence of MVFR and similar groups has helped give others in the same position the courage to take a stand against death.
4. State Governors Governors who granted clemency to death row inmates, sometimes at great risk to their careers. In the present climate, even a pro-death penalty governor who grants clemency is demonstrating great personal courage. BY ALAN COHEN
5. Religious Activists It's perhaps hard to measure the direct results of religious teachings and exhortations from the pulpit but religious ideas do impact one's position on the DP.
6. Academics Without the rigorous research and publication of the academy, many trial lawyers and particularly appellate lawyers would have little to work with. Expert witnesses are often the product of the academy. BY Harry Coverston, Orlando
