SOULFUL CHEMISTRY FALL PAGE 2004  INTRODUCING THE "SnC" ARTISTS
Pressin' Me

Time is money
keep movin'
time is money
don't slow down
time is money
don't stop

this is the message
pressin' me
from my
show the jones'
I am somebody
56 inch screen plasma tv
& the glossed out pages
of my favorite magazines
that disappeared
bit by bit
and been
stealithy replaced
with beautiful people
& oh so catchy phrases
that instigate this gadget madness
I see

Pressin' me
to believe
surfing my personal mainframe
my imagination, feelings, hopes
ideas & dreams
isn't as worthy
as
say uhmm
being trapped in the
wide-world-web
credit card in hand
of course
otherwise
i'm wasting their time
which they say
is money
Pressin' me
to stand over a conveyor belt
grabbing & boxing
shampoo bottles
supported by
broken knees, backs, spirits &
dreams
day & night
downing xanax
--don't worry, they whisper
it only causes
insomnia & blurred vision
just to feel right?
psss. please

Pressin' me
to saturate my silence
with technology
emails, lap-tops, faxes & cells
labeling me
an oddity
if I refuse
to always keep a finger on a button
sending or receiving
is irrelevant
as long as I'm conceiving
a way to make money
which
by the way
could never replace my time
nor
an idea I could have thought up
if I hadn't
been so caught up
in chasing
a chopped down
shredded
chemically altered tree
chasin' that paper

Pressin' me
for more productivity
reminding me
so damn convincingly
that
my private thoughts
aren't accomplishments
unless they're shared
edited
& sold
& to be so bold
as to
question
whether I'm one of the faithful
& if so
prove my commitment
by abandoning the concept
of a lunch hour
that is completely
gadget free
& if I should decide
to take a silent Sunday stroll
through the park
do so
but only guiltily

Pressin' me
to unquestioningly
jump in line
& never challenge
the powers that be
who advise
reaching into our wallets
& worshipping the mighty dollar
instead of
reaching deep within
and discovering
what it is
to know oneself
and really be free

Pressin' me
but my time
is worth much more than money
psss please.
